My EDLD5302 Reflection Forward

My EDLD5302 Reflection Foward
By: Mitch Madden

I will continue using the COVA model as I continue my journey into the Digital Learning and Leading program at Lamar University. I really believe in the COVA model because it allows me a choice in how I want to voice my authentic learning and this develops more of an ownership of the individual education.

I will be incorporating the growth mindset, COVA model, and failing forward strategies in my classroom as I move forward. I have already begun to not only personally adopt the growth mindset thinking, but help my students in developing more of a growth mindset by allowing them more of a choice while taking on projects or assignments. I feel by allowing them a choice and voice in how they present or reach the result will allow them to become more creative, more innovative, and take on more of an ownership of their education.

I saw an article in teach taught by Terry Heick, “Failing Forward: 21 ideas to help students keep their momentum” that will help me make changes within my classroom that will help students feel more comfortable to take risk and develop their growth mindset while following the COVA model as they take on new challenges.  The 21 ideas that were listed in the article were:

Some of these ideas I have already had in place within my classrooms, while others I will start putting the strategy into place. While my classroom is set up on project based learning, we need to do a better job of being able to showcase our work by allowing students to publish their thinking. This will help students to connect with other communities outside of our own to deepen their learning process. I think the next project would be to have my students build their own eportfolio similar to the one I have built for my education technology leadership master’s degree. This would be a great tool for students to showcase their work and a great way for students to utilize the COVA model. The next thing I need to develop in my classroom will be to allow students the opportunity to revise their work and not allow incomplete or no work to be turned in. My goal is to allow students to be able to make revisions to their projects as we develop more of a project based assessment over the traditional paper based assessment that has been in education from the beginning. I believe students will develop more of a growth mindset when they are allowed to showcase their knowledge of the content through more of hands on or project based approach. Taking this step forward and allowing them to revise those project based assessments will develop more of an opportunity to take risk and not fear to try new challenges.

As I move forward in my own personal learning through the DLL program, I will be developing more of a growth mindset by taking on challenges while trying new ideas. I will develop this same process within my own classroom to help my students develop their growth mindset. Accepting these challenges while following the COVA model will allow more ownership in the final product. Keeping the 21 ideas that Terry Heick mentioned will help my students and I not be afraid to take risk while we develop a growth mindset through the use of the COVA model. I must keep in mind that the product is not a final product. Just like my current eportfolio is not my end product. I will continue to build on my eportfolio by making improvements and adding content along the way. I will allow my students the same opportunity as learning is a life long journey that never ends. This will help my students and myself grow as not only students, but as individuals as a whole.
