Why use an e-portfolio?
As we continue to work on our e-portfolio’s this
week, the question why use an e-portfolio comes up. This goes beyond all the
reasons that were given in the readings that I have come across so far in this
course. Sure an e-portfolio will show your growth in learning and allow you to reflect
on what you have learned in a deeper sense. I feel those are great reasons to
use an e-portfolio as those are some reasons I will continue to use my
e-portfolio past my DLL courses. It will allow me to see my own growth in my
education and a shift in my thinking as I understand different views of what I
learn. It will allow me to reflect on what I believed and what I had believed
in the past. It will allow me to showcase my work as I continue to build and
develop this important technology piece, but there is something more.
I believe the one thing that it helps myself and
will help my students beyond the reasons given previously is allowing everyone
to have a voice. I believe we taken ownership in our learning when we have a
voice. I feel an e-portfolio allows us to all have a voice because some
individuals are nervous to speak up when they have the opportunity in class or
a conference. However those individuals feel relaxed and willing to speak up
when they are able to put it in writing or something digital like a blog entry.
It is an easier way for some of us to connect with others showcasing not only
what we have built, but our true thoughts, what we believe, and learn. It is
another way for our students to showcase their knowledge and skills.
I believe we should allow our student’s choice in
their education and having an e-portfolio is another tool for students to
showcase their knowledge and growth in learning. Some students are great test
takers while others are not. Some will benefit with the use of e-portfolio’s
more than others, but an e-portfolio will allow some to have a voice that may
not have spoken or showcased their knowledge when only given one way to do so.
It will also help our student’s develop the skills and thinking process that is
needed for the future. It is giving them a chance to tell the world what they
know and allow them to compete with the world that is turning digital. It is
allowing them to continue growing and reflecting on the life long journey of
learning.
